Art is one of the most purest forms of individuality. When an artist creates a masterpiece, whether it is music, a portrait, or a slam dunk, these art forms captivate an individual’s mind and takes them spiraling down the rabbit hole. Real art does not derive from the woman picking cotton in the field, rather it comes from the sweat that rest helplessly on her right temple. It is one thing to paint a women standing in a field of cotton but, it is another to paint her with her eyes fixated on the sky. When a person sleeps in their mind, they awaken their individuality and allow themselves to see for the first time. Respectively, when a person see for the first time, they see a world which is defined by them and not a mass. Brooklyn artist Jean Michel Basquiat is a prime example of a man who has fallen down the rabbit hole and woken in reality.
Basquiat is apart of the neo-expressionist era. This mean that he is one of the artist that introduced a new way of expressing things (i.e. people, constructs, race) through art. From the tender age of 4, Basquiat was truly special. He could read and write by the time he was 4 and by 11, he was fluent in English, Spanish, and French. Although he was able to understand the meaning of things very quickly, he dropped out of school in the 10th grade. After years of being a nomad, he won his notoriety through his graffiti art and pseudonym “SAMO.” He would often paint in Armani suits and walk around in them with splattered paint everywhere. One of his most familiar works is the “Irony of the Negro Policeman.”
After looking at this painting, what could be the irony of a Negro police officer? Could it be that they were finally Black people in a higher position but, no matter high their position was, they are still treated like second-rate human beings. Or could it be that because they are Black, they should know what it’s like to be a Black man in American society. However, instead of them acknowledging those hardships, they mistreat their power and take their frustration out on innocent Black men. Basquiat was, and still is, the greatest artist that ever lived because of his individual vision of the world around him.
The world loved Basquiat and one of his closest friends was Andy Warhol. However, after Warhol’s death, Basquiat soon followed. His addiction to crack cocaine took hold of him after losing his friend and he overdosed in 1988 at the age of 28.
Of course, music is another art form because if the musical artist knows him or herself, than they are capable of creating and reinventing a fresh sound. Artist like Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu, Sade, J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Drake have brought a new sound into the world because they understand that it’s Art For Art’s Sake. Their individual ideals have allowed them to express themselves in the manner they see fit. Furthermore, it is because they stayed true to themselves that their admires patiently wait to hear what they are going to do next.
The imagination unveils the real perspective of a person. People misunderstand the imagination for being completely false but, how can something be completely false if nothing is absolutely true?
